Tip: Get a Free Powerful, Traffic-Driving Backlink

By Veronica  //  SEO  //  No Comments

Free Traffic with Authority BacklinksIf you know me at all, you know one of the most important things I believe in for helping your site rank is contextual backlinks on authority sites. Of course, ensuring you have some kind of helpful content on your site is number one – but if you’re already doing that and are trying to find some quality backlinks to your site, then I have a nice little tip for you today. I did this on one of my smaller, niche sites a few months ago and my link is still there. It’s on one of the MOST authoritative sites that you could ever hope to find, too! I don’t work a lot on the site in question. It only gets a couple hundred visitors each month. Lately the number one traffic source is pretty evenly split between organic searchers coming from Google and people clicking through to my site from this one single link.

Many of you may already know about this, but I hope someone finds it helpful! The site? Wikipedia.

Whether or not you’ll be able to get such a link will depend on a couple of factors. First of all, you’ll need to find a Wikipedia page that’s closely related to your niche and a nice keyword phrase that gets plenty of searches. You aren’t too worried about competition here, as you aren’t (completely) trying to rank your site for it. Chances are good that Wikipedia comes up high in the results for a lot of search phrases that would be relevant to your site.

Keep in mind…
Before you try to put your link on a Wikipedia page, make sure that you have an awesome article on your site that supports the information or is related (further reading) for the information on the Wikipedia page. If you put in a link to a sales page or the front page of an ecommerce site, your link will likely get removed.

Ok, so now you have a high ranking Wikipedia page for a term that gets a lot of searches each month. You also have a page on your site that supports or adds to the information on that page. Now simply go to the bottom of the Wikipedia page and find the section that says External Links and follow the line across the page to where the ‘edit’ link is and click it. You’ll see the code that the other links in that section are using. It will be a star, with the URL and anchor text in brackets like this:

*[http://www.yourURL.com/title/tt0171492/ YOUR Anchor Text HERE]

That’s it. Now hit save. You’ll probably be asked to complete a captcha. Do so and hit save again. Now your link should be at the bottom of the page.
